What is Research? + How To Brief

What is research?

PART 1 Idea generation

Intuitive approach
Stimulated approach
Systemic approach

A strategy for thinking through a problem

Phase 1 assimilation

Phase 2 General study

Phase 3 development

Phase 4 communication

Analysis

Research

Evaluation

Solution

Research is finding out by asking how, what, why
Its the process of finding facts. These facts will lead to knowledge. Research is done by using what is already known.

Types of research

Primary

Secondary

Quantitative

Qualitative

After this brief introduction to design process we were put into groups and given a word that we then had to expand on. Our groups word was ROUTINE - A prescribed, detailed course of active to be followed regularly, a standard procedure.

We devised a list that we thought ROUTINE consisted of:

Morning routine
Daily routine
Dance routine
Monthly routine
Routine check
Fitness routine
Skin routine
Medication routine
Work related, firman, police
Dependence on routine
OCD
Repetition

We then created a design sheet so we could select a routine for each person in the group and maybe add other ideas.

I was then given the routine, exercise and fitness.

Primary Research

These are leaflets i collected from a gym that i have used for primary research. The leaflets  have interesting graphics on them and i really like how they all work together as a set with the black stripe across them. With this research i discovered closing and opening times, prices and a range of different sporting activities that can be done at a gym/sports centre.

Secondary Research

I started off looking at different graphics that were used to describe different routines and gym exercises, i feel these have interesting images that could be used when we get given out brief. The images produce a very simple way to explain something that in some cases is very complicated.

I also researched some photos that i thought related to exercise routines, the top image has been put together really well merging together 5 different images to form one. I then looked at a timetable of a gym to see what shapes are used, this could then be used as a background for my design direction boards.

This is my secondary research board, this contains images sourced from the internet, i also created shapes that could be found at the gym, although i believe these should be put on my primary research board. Despite this i think they provide a simple representation of the gym.

 Design Direction

For my direction of research i started to look at just routines that could be performed in the gym, this is because i felt these had the most interesting pictures and graphic images. These would provide a range of imagery that could then be expanded and looked at in more detail.
