CoP3 Practical Crit

Practical ideas

Create a piece of packaging that is designed backwards, showcasing the method and how it can be environmentally friendly and help cut waste, the packaging can then hold a sustainable product

Create a publication that helps people develop the skill of designing backwards that is in reverse order reading backwards

Create a publication that shows the problems that there has been with waste, using infographics as the basis to show what these problems are
A publication check list that has on the different pages the things that a designer can do to be more sustainable, so as they go through a project they tick off or record the things as they go

OR they use this publication that I make as a scope for how unsustainable they are being, so throughout the publication there is different scenarios where it shows something that could have been better, e.g so if they use an ink how bad is that ink and the bad things it does and next to it would be what they could have used to be more sustainable. There could be different publications for different aspects of design, so inks, stock choices, the way in which the things are used, the ways in which its used after its life cycle ect.

The different publications (maybe)

Ink publication

Stock publication

Plastic publication

Printing publication

Processes, designing backwards, a poster for the pack

Practical crit

In this crit i presented the ideas shown above so i could receive some feedback

Feedback given:

Use the designing backwards theory in the work

Look at cradle to cradle

Maybe show companies how to use less packaging

Have a look at Thomas Matthews

Could maybe use one of the case studies such as asos and show how they could be more sustainable with there packaging

Could aim at packaging designers and how they could be more sustainable

Like the idea of having something that a designer can read and be educated in becoming more sustainable

Have publications that focus on the important sections packaging design

Evaluate

From this i didn't get much, which may be my fault for not having a huge amount to show, but i think the idea of having different publications for different aspects of graphic design would work well, it would be something that could be sent out to different studios, this would then cater to packaging, because being sustainable crosses over from packaging work and non packaging work, which will all be done within most studios. There is obviously studios who focus solely on packaging, but with that they will need a brand on the packaging they will need to print something they will need to distribute something etc etc so i don't think having a heavily focused publication on just packaging is that good an idea. Especially as my essay is about not just packaging but everything that encompasses it and the processes that lead up to a piece of packaging.

Cradle to cradle research

'Cradle to Cradle design (also referred to as Cradle to Cradle, C2C, cradle 2 cradle, or regenerative design) is a biomimetic approach to the design of products and systems. It models human industry on nature's processes viewing materials as nutrients circulating in healthy, safe metabolisms. It suggests that industry must protect and enrich ecosystems and nature's biological metabolism while also maintaining a safe, productive technical metabolism for the high-quality use and circulation of organic and technical nutrients. Put simply, it is a holistic economic, industrial and social framework that seeks to create systems that are not only efficient but also essentially waste free. The model in its broadest sense is not limited to industrial design and manufacturing; it can be applied to many aspects of human civilization such as urban environments, buildings, economics and social systems.'

Further Evaluation

Looking at this was very interesting, it is as explained above a system that governs a lot of sustainable work in many different design sectors, from graphic design to architecture. I think it is similar to what the publications i want to produce will offer, a way that designers can become more sustainable, the difference is with mine it will be catered to graphic designers, there could then be a website to go with this where its similar to this but again more for graphic designers, so a website where they can socialise, and collaborate with people, like a social networking site but for sustainable graphic designers.
