Who are you? Study session

Ongoing on from our study into typography, specially fonts, readability and legibility, we started to look at how changing the size of the font affects how we read a sentence. We cut up and rearranged the sentence ‘Who are you?’ creating differently pronounced sentences from the same words. The best way to see this working was to read the sentences out loud. The bolder and bigger words, people would say louder and with more vigor, where as the smaller and subtler words were spoken gentle and softer, creating some curious sentences.

These are the sentences cut out, and just arranged into the different point sizes.

These were the first cut out letters, i read these out silently but slightly adjusted the tone of my voice when it came to the bolder letters.

Because this typeface is larger i read it louder and emphasized the bolder words.

These next few pictures are of all the different point sizes and weights put together, this means when it is read out loud that my voice varied in tone a lot. With the bigger bolder letters being the loudest and the smaller point size and weight being the quietest.

This project helped to show us how a typeface can effect the tone of voice that is given off by and advert, branding ect. It shows it is extremely important to get the correct point size and weight of font because it could look completely out of place in some cases, for example a typeface with a large point size and heavy weight being used on packaging for small cuddly teddy bear would look out of place, but if it was to be used on a heavy duty chainsaw it would look more at home.
