Design For Web

Design For Web

Today we were given a brief by Simon on web.

History

The World Wide Web was invented by CERN, The European Organisation for Nuclear Research, this organisation is a group of extremely clever scientists. Within there offices the scientists couldn't be bothered, probably along with many other reasons, to stand up and walk to another persons office or desk to give them some research or something they had discovered and so one man decided to try and solve this problem. British computer scientist, Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1991.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee

CERN Logo

CERN is based in Geneva on the Franco–Swiss border

The first web page address was http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html

The first web server was a NeXT computer designed and created by Sir Steve Jobs

The first web image to ever be put on the internet was a all female pop group founded by CERN employees.

The musical group are called Les Horrible Cernettes, a comedy band based at the CERN laboratory in Geneva which was comprised of admin assistants and significant others of CERN scientists.

Internet terminology

HTTP - Hyper text transfer protocol, process of transferring the web server to the website.
URL - Uniform research locator
HTML - Hyper text mark up language
CSS - Cascading style sheets
FTTP - File transfer protocol (send information from one computer to the next)
CMS - Content management system
Skeuomorphism - An object or feature copying the design of a similar artifact in another material

THE DEATH / DEMISE / DOWNFALL / DECEASE / PASSING / FALL / COLLAPSE / GENERAL COMMUNAL HATRED OF /

Skeuomorphism - An object or feature copying the design of a similar artifact in another material, where you imitate something that it isn't. Example: where a book that is on screen changes page and you can see that page flipping over.

Found definition

'A skeuomorph /ˈskjuːəmɔrf/ is a derivative object that retains ornamental design cues from structures that were necessary in the original. [1] Examples include pottery embellished with imitation rivets reminiscent of similar pots made of metal [2] and a software calendar that imitates the appearance of binding on a paper desk calendar.'

An example of this is the book stand for apple, this was before the iso 7 update.

This was on the update, it still slightly resembles a bookshelf but it has got rid of the wooden effect, its more minimalistic and less cluttered.

Responsive, a web trend that has been trending for a while
Responsive design’ could be called ‘reactive design’. It is‘responsive’ because the design ‘responds’, i.e. can be adapted to a variety of media using screens of various sizes. The concept was introduced by Ethan Marcotte, a webdesigner and developer, who became famous after publishing his book,Responsive Web Design, in which he discussed the constraints and difficulties involved in developing responsive web sites.

Next we told what what we had to consider when designing a website.

Next we looked at the design of a website, when it comes to the design of a website its vital or the best way to use a grid that provides an invisible structure of a website, it provides a disciplined and consistent look.

The questions.

Whats the point?

What is the purpose?

Who are the target audience?

What do the target audience need?

Next Simon gave showed us websites and we had to say what we thought about each website that came up, but we had to say the first words that came into our head.
