Creating the illustrations

The concept for my design

for my design i am going to take the overall picture of my essay, which is to look at what WE can do to help, because starting from the bottom will help and if everybody can do just a little it will help on a much larger scale. So creating something that is easy to understand and read but will also be informative and educational, the idea is to create something that can be sent out to homes as a mail shot and inform them on what they can personally do to help look after the environment and reduce there carbon footprint.

This then relates to my essay and how as a designer i should help and not hinder the problem of climate change, through promoting awareness and telling people what the problem is it will hopefully reach a few people and make them change there ways.

The design

Simple
Informative
Educational
Understandable

For the illustrations i am going to use the facts i found from information is beautiful because i feel they provide the best opportunities to create the illustrations.

Facts from INFORMATION IS BEAUTIFUL

Having a vegetarian diet instead of a heavy meat diet uses 2.5kg less of carbon a day.

having the thermostat on 24 and not 25 saves 0.5kg of Carbon a day

Having a snack of an apple instead of strawberries uses 5.70kg less of carbon a day.

commuting by train instead of a car saves 3.49kg of Carbon a day on average

having a shower with a water saving shower head saves 1.5kg of carbon a day

using a clothesline instead of a tumble-dryer saves 2.4kg of carbon a day

turning your computer off overnight saves 0.8kg of carbon a day

running outside instead on a treadmill uses 0.5kg less of carbon a day.

Using a fridge with an A++ standard uses 0.3kg less of carbon a day

using an energy saving light bulb saves 0.3kg of carbon a day

unplugging your phone charger uses 0.19kg less of carbon a day.

not smoking saves 0.02kg  of carbon a day

Having a carton of local wine instead of a imported bottle of wine saves 1.1kg  of carbon a day.

Washing dishes with your hands instead of a dishwasher uses 1kg less of carbon a day.

Take your own cloth bags or plant based material bags to do the shop instead of plastic bags.

Gathering relevant images.

Advertisements

I really like theses shock advertisements below they make people think just as did the Al Gore video.  I don't think i would be able to o this though because it would require some strong images and strong photoshop skills. Plus i want to create something that is informative.

Thinking about my illustrations i really like the the simplicity of the images i have found above and below, these are more like what i would like to produce, something that is is simple and educational.

Generating a colour scheme

After looking at different types of work i started to think about the colours i would use for my illustrations, many of these use bright colours to give a striking messages so this would be something i should think about.

I decided to go for a range of pastel colours, i thought these gave off something that was easy to understand, was very relevant with sustainability and work really well together as a set, they also pair up which i could then transfer across to my illustrations creating them in 2 colours.
